Gyaru style will rise in 2025
What is Gyaru?
The word gyaru is a Japanese loanword based on the English slang word "gal". Although it has not been fully confirmed, some people say that the term gal also became popular when Wrangler released women's jeans called "Gals" in 1972. When the word first began to be used in Japan in the 1970s, it referred to energetic, youthful women.
Is a Japanese fashion subculture for young women, often associated with gaudy fashion styles and dyed hair.[1] The term gyaru is a Japanese transliteration of the English slang word gal.[2][3][4][5] In Japan, it is used to refer to young women who are cheerful, sociable, and adopt trendy fashions,[6] serving as a stereotype of culture as well as fashion.[7]
The fashion subculture was considered to be nonconformist and rebelling against Japanese social and aesthetic standards[8] during a time when women were expected to be housewives and fit Asian beauty standards of pale skin and dark hair. Early in its rise, the gyaru subculture was considered racy and associated with juvenile delinquency and frivolousness among teenage girls.[9] The term is also associated with dance culture and clubbing. Its popularity peaked in the 1990s and early 2000s.
What are the characteristics of the gyaru style?
The gyaru style originally described some girls wearing brightly colored and tight dresses to show their lively personality. It originated in Japan, so it is also a manifestation of subculture promotion. Later, the dressing style became more and more personalized, and the rise of the gyaru style also gradually evolved from clothing to makeup.
After the mature gyaru style was formed, they focused on a westernized, feminine appearance and party-like behavior. Their characteristics include wearing flashy clothes, heavy makeup, often dyeing their hair light or various colors, and liking to get a tan.
What is the relationship between Y2K and Gyaru that appeared in recent years?
Gyaru and Y2K are distinct but often interconnected fashion and cultural trends. Gyaru, originating in Japan, is a style known for bold, often exaggerated makeup, brightly colored and patterned clothing, and dramatic hairstyles. Y2K, short for "Year 2000," refers to the aesthetic popular around the turn of the millennium, characterized by futuristic, metallic, and sometimes playful designs, often incorporating elements like low-rise jeans, crop tops, and chunky accessories. While not identical, the two styles share some common ground, particularly in the early 2000s, with Gyaru incorporating Y2K elements and vice versa.
What they have in common is that they all dress brightly and show off their personality. Essentially, while not identical, Gyaru and Y2K represent distinct yet interconnected styles that share a common ground in their bold, playful, and attention-grabbing aesthetics, especially during the late 90s and early 2000s.
There are many reasons why so many women are into this look. The simplest reason is that it is popular and young women, while they may appear glib, want to be popular. Another reason is that many of the styles in gyaru fashion may be considered cute, which is also popular among young women. In addition, some sub-styles of gyaru fashion are also associated with other subcultures, such as biker style, so women who are involved in these subcultures often choose clothing in these styles in order to better fit in.
Why Gyaru will rise in 2025
This updated style combines elements of the original Spice Girls look with current fashion trends, making it more accessible and appealing to a wider audience. With the rise of subculture, more young people in more countries will know the gyaru style. Fashion is a cycle, retro wear is popular in recent years, repeatedly verified in millennial trends. Therefore, the public acceptance of subculture is getting higher and higher, and a new style is needed to replace the aesthetic fatigue, and gyaru is the most suitable.
How to be Gyaru
Today, instead of being overly hyped by the media like it was in the beginning, Spice Girl culture is much more low-key than the Spice Girl culture that initially brought the subculture to prominence. This makes it more accessible to the average fashionista. Whether it’s getting your nails sculpted into claws by your local manicurist, trying on a super short miniskirt from Miu Miu, or just being a party animal who loves to have fun, Spice Girl culture is more accessible to the general public now than ever before. Learn of the different substyles
One of the things that makes gyaru so amazingly versatile is the numerous substyles it has. You can go for a sweet look such as himekaji or something a bit more outrageous like manba, and it’ll still be gal! Don’t feel pressured to find ‘your style’ right away – this comes with experimenting and trying out different outfits, to see which one reflects you the most (although kudos to those who find their style almost immediately!). So take time to learn of the different substyles and what differentiates them from each other.
Put together your first gyaru coord. It doesn’t really matter what you wear – as long as you have the gyaru makeup and hair done, then you are gyaru, but it does help to put together some ‘gyaru coords’. Take inspiration from the old magazines and instagram pictures you’ve gathered in the previous step to create some new outfits with the items you already have in your wardrobe (or buy new clothes if you have the budget for it). At this point you probably would’ve already chosen your gyaru style, but no worries if you haven’t as it’s good to try out as many styles as you can in the beginning so that you can determine which is more you. Tip – I wouldn’t suggest jumping straight to brand as you’d want to develop a good eye to putting coordinates together. Optional – Watch ‘Super Gals’ (or read the manga)
Gals! (aka Super Gals! anime) is a staple gyaru manga, and it teaches you about the true meaning of what it is to be gyaru. Ran Kotobuki is iconic, and her fierce nature and amazing sense of style makes her Shibuya’s number one gyaru! I would always recommend it to those who haven’t watched this because it gives you so many good vibes afterwards. You can read it online through sites like Manga Rock. And don’t forget to have fun!One of the most important things in gyaru is your gyaru spirit, so while it’s good to know how to do your makeup, it’s also important that you enjoy gal and have fun while doing it!
